OBITUARY

MRS J. H. HALL News has been received tn Christchurch of the death in Tauranga on Monday of Mrs Mary Rosa Hall, widow of Mj J. H, Hall, formerly of Papanui road. Christchurch, Mrs Hall left a few months ago to spend the winter months in Tauranga. Her friends in Christchurch knew that she had been ill, but understood that she had recovered. So the news of her sudden death in a private hospital came as a saddening shock. Mrs Hall was deeply interested in the welfare of seamen, and was a staunch and generous supporter of the Christchurch Ladies’ Guild of the British Sailors’ Society. She had travelled widely, and on her visits to England she got in touch with the headquarters of the society in London and with many branches, and gathered much information that was of vglqe to the local society. For many years she was president of the Ladies’ Guild and frequently lent her home in Papanui road for parties held to raise money to maintain the guild’s work. In addition, she made large donations' to the society’s funds and many of the amenities at the Seamen’s Institute in Lyttelton were made possible through her generosity. During the' last few' yeat'V she spent much time at the guild’s wool room whore she gave out wool to knitters and received the - finished comforts. Mr Hall cjied some years ago. WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION NORTH BRIGHTON The North Brighton- branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Unlo'n celebrated it? eighteenth birthday recently. Mrs Goldman presided over a good attendance of members and friends. Representatives of seven unions brought greetings Mrs Woodward, of Sydenham, sang two songs, Mrs Noonan, of North Brighton gave a humorous reading, and Mr R G Brown of Christchurch, a talk on “American Life and the World Fair in New York ” Later a "peace” meeting was held when there was a fair attendance of members. Mrs Black, of Linwood, gave a talk on “The fundamental causes of war from a Christian viewpoint.”

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Mairchau.—At the June meeting df the Mairehau Women's Institute, members enjoyed a series of impromptu speeches. These taking part were Mesdames H4rvey, Shelley. Mclntosh, Waugh, and McGill. For the Golden Thread, Mi’s Parkin read a paper on the life and work of Miss Esther Glen The roll call was answered with a recipe for a meatless dish, Mrs Burgess reported on having helped with the packing of soldiers' parcels. Members intimated their willingness to help with the Plunket stall at the Winter Show. Competitions, judged by Mesdames Harvey. Lawson, and Miss Arnott resulted as' follows:—Fruit loaf: Mrs Coleman 1, Mrs McKenzie 2, Mrs Sheffield 3. Apron from second-hand material; Mrs Sheffield 1, Mrs McKenzie 2, Mrs Coleman 3. Best chrysanthemum: Mrs Judd 1, Mrs Coleman 2, Mrs Parkins 3.
