LYTTELTON HARBOUR CHANNEL

REPORT ON RESULTS OF DREDGING

The shrinkage in the depth of the entrance channel at Lyttelton during the time that the dredge Canterbury was out of commission has not had any adverse effect on the movements of ships. This was reported by the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s engineer (Mr P. W Fryer) at the board’s meeting yesterday. Iri his monthly report Mr Fryer said that soundings of the dredged area in the channel and turning basin showed a very satisfactory recovery of depth had taken place since dredging was resumed in February. Mr A. E. Langdale-Hunt said that the portion of the report referring to the depth of the entrance channel was indefinite? as there was nothing to show that a foot of spoil had been removed Mr Fryer produced plans showing the comparative depths in the channel before and after the dredge was put out of action. He said that the minimum depth had decreased by three to four feet, but in the last three months since the dredge had been working at least two feet of this had been recovered.
