THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

RECORD NUMBER OF CANDIDATES STRAIGHT CONTEST FOR MAYORALTY The most formidable ballot papers in the history of local body elections in l Christchurch will face voters on May 27. There will be- a straight-out contest between the Citizens Association and the Labour candidates lor the Mayoralty, but no fewer than 46 candidates will contest the 16 seats on the City Council, 27 the 10 seats on the North Canterbury Hospital Board, and nine each the' four seats on the Lyttelton Harbour Board and the newlyconstituted North Canterbury Catchment Board. ■ Nominations closed at noon yesterday with the returning officer (Mr. H. S. Feast) and, as expected from the announcements of the various groups, they reached a record total. The previous highest number of candidates for the City Council was 44. in 1935, but at the last election, in 1941. there were only 33. . LYTTELTON There are two candidates for the Mayoralty of Lyttelton, Messrs A. K. Dyne* nominated by Messrs J. T. Norton and F. E. Sutton, and W. T. Lester, nominated by Messrs J. P. Paulsen and W. G. Carson. Mr Dyne Is a retiring councillor and Mr Lester was Mayor from 1917 to 1923. and from 1933 to 1933. There are 15 nominations for the nine seats on the council, the Labour Party nominating e full ticket. Only four members of the previous council are among those s'-kml election.
