SCARLET FEVER

ADVICE TO PERSONS. WITH SORE THROATS

Advice to persons suffering from sore throats to stay at home until the symptoms had cleared was given by the district medical officer of health, Dr. J. H. Blakelock, yesterday. Such spre throats, he said, were likely to be signs of scarlet fever, which is still prevalent in Canterbury, 42 cases liaving been notified to the Department of Health last week.

“The infection is of a very mild type and there may be little or no rash,” said Dr. Blakelock, who said it was quite possible for persons to have scarlet fever without being aware of "it. “The fact that it is so mild means that many persons with scarlet fever may be going about their ordinary business and so helping to spread the infection.”

Dr. Blakelock said he saw no reason to change the view he expressed last week, that no good purpose would be served by closing the schools. All home contacts of patients were quarantined for seven days from the last date of contact.
