ATHLETICS

—« MEETING AT RUGBY PARK JUNIOR . AND .WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS The Canterbury Amateur A.thletic Association held the junior and women’s championships at Rugby Park on Saturday in fine weather and on a track that was all in favour of fast times. The day’s sport showed that Canterbury possesses a wealth Of athletic talent among the many youths who are taking part, and the presence of competitors from South Canterbury and the West Coast added interest to some very keen and exciting racing. Ihe sprinters seen out this season represent very good class, the proved champion being the Boys’ High School runner, K. W. Taylor. He won the 100 yards championship in 10 2-ssec from a fine runner in K. Plunkett (South Canterbury), but the latter reversed the positions over 220 yards in 23 2-ssec. In the mile, J. Oakley, Technical College, showed good form, winning in the fast time of 4min 30 2-ssec, which is only 2-ssec outside the New Zealand record. The times in the 120 yards hurdles, won by J. H. Borland, and the three heats of the 75 yards womens, won by the Boldero sisters and Miss D. Joe, were all better than the present New Zealand times, but on account of the following wind these could not be allowed. J. H. Borland’s jumping was a feature of the day’s sport, and in clearing sft lljin he beat his own record. In a further attempt he just failed with the bar at 6ft.
