PRESENTATION TO MUSEUM
* MODEL BARQUE A model of a four masted barque was presented to the Canterbury Museum on Friday by Mr J. Snell, 396 Park road, New Brighton. The gift was received by the actingcurator of the Museum (Mr R. S. Duff) and the Curator (Dr. R. A. Falla), in expressing appreciation of the gift, explained that part of the long delayed plans for the extension and reorganisation of the Canterbury Museum included special provision for good displays of early colonist and other historical material. Associated with this it was hoped to make a feature of the relics and material associated with the early shipping history that had been so important in the development of New Zealand, Already the museum possessed valuable exhibits such as early whale boats and gear and relics of historic wrecks associated with the days ul' immigrant ships and other sailing vessels. Jl was thought that there / tnighl be scattered throughout Canterbury other models or relics which their owners might present to the Museum if they knew of the plans for a comprehensive exhibition. It was realised that the lime was'nut opportune for extensions to the building or permanent exhibits on a Cull scale, but every year made it less easy to obtain this early material and the Museum authorities would be glad to receive suitable exhibits for storage in the meantime and temporary exhibition in the space available. Even damaged or dilapidated models could often be repaired and the Museum would welcome an opportunity of inspecting even those that might be considered by their owners to be of doubtful value, he added.
