WIN FOR NEW PARTY
BY-ELECTION IN BRITAIN
' GOVERNMENT REVERSE (Rec. 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 10. The new Common Wealth political party gained its second success at the polls, when Lieutenant H. Lawson won the Skipton by-election by a narrow majority over the Conservative candidate. The Independent candidate forfeited his deposit. The by-election resulted from the death of Mr G. W. Rickards (Conservative). who had a majority of 5059 over the Labour candidate at the last election. . , , "The Skipton by-election was a shock to the Conservative candidate's supporters,” says “The Times.” "The Skipton electors turned out in greater extent than for any by-election for a long time, and generally showed nothing but gratitude and honour to Mr Churchill as the nation’s war leader. “He appeared to the electors in a different light as the leader of the Conservative Party. There is unquestionably strong dissatisfaction with the Government’s domestic record and its preparations for the peace.”
