There will be a few fresh horses engaged, including The Joker, who has not long been returned from his unsuccessful trip to the Melbourne Cup meeting. The going promises to be much similar, to that at the Cup meeting on Boxing Day, and under the win and place system, the following horses can be expected to race well : Owhiro Hurdles: Nightcalm, Heidelberg, Native Chief. Novice Handicap: Good Cast, Chestnut Glow, St. Nattar. Flying Fortress Handicap: Lord Advocate. Invulnerable, Hearth. Jockey Club Handicap: Amorlad, Bascule. Hopeful Handicap; Joygiver, Lyndal, Periwig. Abbotsford Handicap: Sal’s Pal, Full Chase, Nigger Lad. Hazlett Memorial Handicap: Aurora Australis, Royal Flight, Silver Sox. Waihola Handicap: Abdicate, Gunga Din, Retriever. TURF GOSSIP Encouraging Form Heidelberg was going like a winner when he dislodged his rider two fences from home in the hurdle race at Invercargill on Monday, and on the form shown will be in keen demand for to-morrow’s race at Wingatui. Recovered Invulnerable had two races at the Southland meetings, winning one, and filling second place to Monetary in the other. He has not nad any recurrence of bleeding attacks, and should be an interesting contestant at Wingatui to-morrow. At Omakau Royal Rae, who carried strong support on the first day at Wingatui, and is similarly engaged to-morrow, is to remain for the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting on January 15. He is the only Riccarton horse engaged at the fixture. The nominations for the principal event, the Moran Memorial Handicap, of £2OO, one mile and a quarter, are as follows: —Sister Sal, Silver Sox, Aurora Australis, Courtdress, Kohara, Silver Mask, Hearth, Royal Rae, Nightcalm, Dark Olga, Paladeo. Another Attempt Bashful Lady has been recommissioned after a spell, and is to be prepared for autumn racing. All going well, she will, no doubt, make an attempt to win her third consecutive Winter Cup, and so equal the performance of Catalogue, who won the race in 1937, 1938, and 1939. Scottish Dale’s Mission Scottish Dale was scratched for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, at 9.10 o’clock yesterday morning. She will start in the Hazlett Gold Cup, in which she will be ridden by A, Messervy.—(P.A.) Offer Refused . Bonnie Chela, a dual winner at Wyndham, is a four-year-old filly by Salmagundi from Cetchela by Cetigne from Cheeky Lass by Flippant from Miss Martini by Son of a Gun. and was bred by Mr J. Ewan, of Invercargill. She was formerly owned by Mr R. W. Wilson, of Dunedin, owner also of Sir Saladln, a brother to Bonnie Chela, but now races in the interests of Mrs C. Rice, of Dunedin. who refused a substantial offer for her after her successes.

A Quick Rise , , „ • . Aurora Australis raced herself out of hack company at the Invercargill meeting, but is still eligible to contest the Walhola Hack Handicap at Wingatui to-mor-row. She is also in the Hazlett Gold Cup, and is likely to contest that race, as her owners, Messrs J. and W. Hazlett, have made several fruitless attempts to win the event. The Salmagundi—Ruling Light filly is undoubtedly , brilliant, and in spite of her ambitious mission, will no doubt be first choice in the Gold Cup, in which she will be ridden by W. F. Ellis. •

TROTTING NOTES

(2) Suggest you write to the editor of the “Trotting Calendar.” „ , Trammle, Christchurch: (1) J. E. Roches Royal Drusus 1, Gold Country 2, Location 3. (2) Dusolina won on the same day, February 27. 1932. Ovend’s Handicap Ovend, a winner at the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting, has been handlcapped on 12 yards In the Broadway Trot at the Reefton meeting and not on scratch as published. Improved Form Within won the Hornby Handicap at Addington on Monday and paid a good double-figure dividend, though in the Stewards’ Handicap on the first day she could only finish a very poor fifth behind Douglas McElwyn, Mohican. Manian. and Margin, all of whom she beat on the second dav, Before Monday’s win, Within had started three times this season without gaining a place, and last season in 12 starts she won once, was second twice, third three times, and twice fourth. A Consistent Team

L. A. Maidens, who some months ago established his headquarters at New Brighton, has his small team in good order and at the Christmas and New Year meetings he established a good record for consistency. Fine Art, who had run second in the Free-for-All at Addington in November, but had shown few glimpses of his true form, finished just behind the placed horses In the Ashburton Cup, and at the same meeting Zingarrie and Southland were second and third respectively in the Midsummer Handicap. On the opening day of the Canterbury Park meeting Lady Caro) finished third in the Railway Handicap, Zingarrie was third in the Lyttelton Handicap, Oxford Scholar was first, and Lady Carol second in the Islington Handicap, and Fine Art fourth in the Au Revoir Handicap. On the second day Zingarrie was third in the Middleton Handicap, and Oxford Scholar second in the Selwyn Handicap. Maidens has plainly brought back to form several horses that appeared to have passed their best.
