PATRIOTIC FUNDS
CONSIDERATION BY CONFERENCE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. Various suggestions for raising paL riotic funds were considered by the Dominion patriotic conference to-day, after the proposals had been examined by a sub-committee. It was announced that the Lady Newall New Zealand Gift Book, containing contributions from leading New Zealand writers, was being printed, and that the proceeds would be devoted to patriotic funds. It was decided to refer to provincial councils for their consideration the special street system of raising funds used in Australia, particulars of which had been received from the New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr C. A. Berendsen) The sub-committee stated that, in'its opinion, the scheme was a good one. The view was taken that the difficult/ was 100 great of operating on a national basis the household collection box scheme. It was decided, however, to tfefer the proposal to provincial councils for independent action. It was announced that a special film production “For Ever and A Day," would be screened throughout New Zealand. 35 per cent, of the film hire being available for patriotic funds. No action was taken on a proposal for an additional tax of 5 per cent, on totalisator investments. A recommendation by the subcommittee that "the Government be asked for approval of a £IO,OOO patriotic art union was adopted. Other recommendations approved were that the Government be approached to grant each patriotic district an extra race day a year in aid of patriotic funds, and that the Government be asked to reconsider its decision prohibiting the broadcasting of names of donors and their subscriptions in radio-telephone or similar appeals. It was also recommended that a letter be forwarded to the picture industry by the Patriotic Fund Board asking for its co-operation in a special patriotic effort for 1944. The sub-committee stated that it was unable to recommend a “Miss New Zealand" contest on a national basis. POSTAL CHOCOLATE SERVICE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. A postal chocolate service to New Zealand service personnel overseas is to be inaugurated by the National Patriotic Fund Board on January 17. Making this announcement before the conclusion of the Dominion patriotic conference. the secretary (Mr E. A. Hayden) said the board had been operating a postal tobacco scheme successfully for some time. The new service would cater for those who wished to send chocolate to members of the New Zealand forces overseas, and found difficulty in buying readily from retail shoos sufficient chocolate for the purpose Arrangements had been made for the manufacture of chocolate which would withstand tropical conditions. When fhe scheme was ready for operation special order forms would be available at po°t offices.
