OBITUARY

MR J. C. C. MCLACHLAN Mr John Comrey Campbell McLachlan, district fields inspector for the Crown Lands Department, who died at Christchurch on Friday, was a wellknown resident of Ashburton for a number of years. He was born in Southland and was transferred to Ashburton from Gore about 1920 as agent for the Crown Lands Department. Mr McLachlan took a keen interest in sporting activities, and was president of the Ashburton Rugby Union for some years, and sole selector of the Ashburton County representative team for four or five years. He was also a prominent Rugby referee. He was closely associated with athletics in the district, and was art official at all athletic meetings, including the Advance Ashburton Association’s Labour Day galas. A member of the Ashburton Boxing Association. Mr McLachlan was one of the official timekeepers during the New Zealand boxing championships in 1931. He was also official timekeeper ofjthe Ashburton Trotting and Racing Clubs for several years, and a prominent member of the Ashburton Bowling Club, being champion bowler and a representative bowler for Mid-Canter-bury. He was chairman of the Ashburton Swimming Centre for many vears, and also belonged to the Asbmirton Club and M.S.A.

Mr McLachlan left Ashburton about 1937 for Christchurch, where he was district fields inspector until his death.
