COMPANY NEWS

National Insurance.—Speaking at the seventieth annual meeting of the Na. tional Insurance Company yesterday, the chairman of directors (Mr G. R. Ritchie) said that premium income for the year was larger by £18,775 than that for the previous year. Losses generally were higher, but were not out of proportion to the Increase in premiums. Taxation was still mounting, and had now reached the stage where for every £1 distributed to shareholders by way of dividends, £2 was required to meet the demands of the Dominion and other governments. The chairman added that in consideration of the good work of the staff in face of wartime difficulties, the directors had again granted a bonus to all members of the company’s staff, both here and abroad, including those In the armed forces.— (P.S.S.)

RAILWAY RETURNS

DECREASE IN NUMBER OF PASSENGERS

A decrease of 20,263 passengers for the four weeks ended on November 13, and an increase in passenger revenue of £4B, compared with the corresponding period last year, is noted in the monthly returns of the Canterbury railway district. The decrease in the number of passengers is accounted for by the closing of military camps, and the revenue increase by the larger number of soldiers travelling on long-distance furlough. The only other decreases were in the figures for the carriage of livestock. There was a large increase in the number of road motor passengers, and in the tonnage of goods carried by rail. The revenue for all items showed an increase on last year’s figures, the figure for goods rising from £93,963 to £104,645. Returns for the month were.as follows, with the previous year’s figures in parenthesis’—passengers, 192,860 (213,123); season tickets. 14,970 (12.970); road motor passengers, 37,304 (28,621); road motor goods, 1256 tons (1090); cattle and calves, 6316 (6685); sheep and pigs, 20.651 (24.133); timber, 15,285 tons (12,759): other goods, 153,469 tons (138,330).

Details of the revenue for the two periods were;—passengers. £27,832 (£27.784); season tickets, £2736 (£2491); parcels and luggage. £3449 (£2817); goods. £104,645 (£93,963); road motor passengers, £4591 (£4014); road motor goods, £1622 (£1239); miscellaneous, £7312 (£5900); total, £152,187 (£138,208).
