CENTENNIAL GATES

HORORATA RESERVE DISCUSSED

A suggestion that a sum of money be put aside for gates commemorating the centennial of New Zealand at the Selwyn Plantation Board’s reserve at Hororata, was made by Mr A. E. Langdale Hunt at a meeting of the board held yesterday. When asked to suggest a sum of money he said he thought good gates could be procured for £ 1000. (Laughter.) ' Mr N. C. Kensington (chairman) said he thought that the plantation at Hororata should bt kept as a private memorial and not a public reserve, and he pointed out that the board had no regulations providing for the control of a public domain. Another point he made was that this reserve was only one mile from the Hororata Domain and two miles from the Coalgate Domain. Mr E. A. Cooney (superintendent) suggested that a stone pillar should be erected on each side of two iron gates, and on each pillar a bronze plaque should be fixed, one commemorating the centenary and the other bearing the names of board members in 1940. Several members agreed that if, as had been originally decided, the plantation was to be kept as a museum of trees it would be a pity to exclude the public from this place. The matter was left in the hands of the working committee to make further plans. The chairman reported that he had communicated with the Canterbury Education Board with reference to the area reserve 1579 at New Brighton, and he said he hoped that at the next meeting a report dealing with the progress of negotiations would be discussed.
