DUNEDIN J.C.

GUINEAS WON BY ROYAL FLIGHT

SUCCESSES FOR MINORITY AND NIGHT LANCER From Our Own Reporter DUNEDIN, October 9. The Dunedin Jockey Club was favoured with ideal conditions for its spring meeting at Wlngatui to-day, and there was a large attendance. The course was heavy, and although it improved during the afternoon, times were very slow. The sum of £44,175 was handled, against £36,333 10s on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £7841 10s. The principal event, the Ranfurly Handicap was won by the second choice, Minority, who has won the two races he has contested since being bought for 300 guineas at the Grand National meeting. He was always one of the leaders, and drew to the front six furlongs from home. He had a lead of three lengths entering the straight from Platform, who was a similar distance in front of Paladeo and Bascule, with Foxhaven becoming prominent from the rear position. Platform made a game attempt to bridge the gap, but although keeping Minority up to his work, he had no chance of overhauling him. Foxhaven was a poor third and six lengths further back. Royal Lancer got up to beat the tiring Bascule. Paladeo and Palfrey were beaten off. Minority owed his success a good deal to his stealing a march on the field when he shot to the front, as from then onwards he had all his opponents struggling in the holding ground to keep within reasonable distance of him. The Guineas Royal Plight was confidently supported to win the Dunedin Guineas and she carried out her part well. She was one of the first to break the line, but her rider gradually steadied her in behind John o’ London and Invulnerable. There was very little pace on to the three furlong pest, where Invulnerable had taken charge from John o’ London, with Royal Flight about three lengths away, and the trio carried on in this order to the straight entrance. Invulnerable soon disposed of John o’ London, and Royal Flight then appeared on the fence. Mustering up a marked turn of 'speed on a holding track, she was able to take advantage of an opening on the inside of Invulnerable, and in a few strides she settled the issue. She actually drew right away in the last furlong, and, when it is recorded that 1 the second horse, five lengths away, was three lengths in front of the third horse, John o’ London, who tired badly, and the fourth horse was some 20 lengths back, her superiority on the day can be realised. Langue d’Or and Great Legend were well back. Although the winner’s breeder-owner, Mr D. M. Tweedie, of Riverton, has won most of the classic races at Wingatui, this was his first success in the Dunedin Guineas. There was some disappointment when it was announced that Bonny Flight, sister to Royal Flight, was withdrawn from the McLean Stakes. She was on the scene, but she contracted a cold on the. trip, and it was not deemed wise to start her. In her absence, the public voted strongly for another Southland filly in Lyndal, a recently-named youngster by Man’s Pal from Half Note by Paper Money from Pink Terrace, an Oaks winner. Evidently the good reports from Invercargill of her speed were well founded as she came from well back to run past the pacemaker. Runaway, a furlong from home, to win comfortably. Lyndal was the fourth consecutive Southlander to win the McLean Stakes.

The biggest dividend of the day was returned by Night Lancer in the Telegraph Handicap He went to the front from barrier rise, and although he was stopping in the last furlong, he lasted to hold off a late run by Silver Sox, who was in fifth place turning tor home. Hearth showed her best form for some time by getting up to beat Princess Myosotis on the post for third money. The favourite, St. Cloud, failed badly in the going, and was never within reach of the leaders. Her bracketed mate, Lord Advocate, was squeezed back at the start, but ran a very satisfactory race, and finished well up in fifth place.
