FIVE CHARGES AGAINST SOLDIER

COURT-MARTIAL AT BURNHAM Five charges involving desertion, absence without leave, and conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline, were preferred against Driver Raymond Barrington Brown, 2nd N.Z.E.F., when he appeared beforfe a court-martial at "Burnham yesterday. The principal charge was one of desertion, in that Brown absented himself without leave at Wellington from April 28 to August 25, when he was arrested in civilian clothes by the civil police at Auckland. Brown was charged also with the loss by neglect of equipment of a total value of £l3 3s 7d. absenting himself without leave from the guardroom when under arrest from August 28 to August 31 when he was arrested by the civil police. The cwo charges of conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline were that Brown was in possession ofanother soldier’s paybook, and gave a wrong name to the civil police. The president of the court-martial was Major D. B. Cameron, and the members were Captain W. Laing and Captain C. H. Harris, The prosecuting officer was Lieutenant T.' R. M. Hobbs, M.C., and the defending officer Captain I. A. Wood. Major J. D. Hutchison was judge-advo-cate.
