Victory Celebrations
The good sense of the mayors and chairmen of local bodies in the Christchurch metropolitan district in condemning the Government’s proposal to hold victory parades in cities and towns on Saturday next is to be applauded. Machine-made demonstrations to celebrate a wellearned victory will strike no responsive chord in a public who realise that the campaign in Italy is far from finished and that until a full victory is won over the Axis lavish celebrations are out of place and. will serve no good purpose. They will not promote morale, which is already high; they may even have an opposite effect in stimulating the complacency which is one of our most dangerous enemies. Moreover, as the local body representatives have pointed out, the parades will require the use of thousands of gallons of petrol, which, if the Minister of Supply is correct,- can ill be spared. The Prime Minister should even now realise that he has mistaken public feeling and call off the celebrations.
