MAGISTRATES COURT
SATURDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) THEFT FROM MILITARY CAMP John Henry Bearman, a'cook in a military camp, was charged with the theft of two legs of lamb, two loins of lamb, 41b oi sultanas, and one pound of tea,of a total value of 18s, the property of the New -Zealand Army Department. Detective-Sergeant A. Herron said ac-. cused had been slopped when leaving a military camp in a motor-car and the goods were found in the car. With him were an officer and a non-commissioned officer.
Detective-Sergeant Herron said accused had taken full responsibility and when arrested had remarked: “Well, I’ll be the mug.” The Magistrate: Well, that is not very satisfactory. It is not the way we do our business. The statement by accused leaves an impression that he is shielding someone else. Some time ago there was a lot of this petty thieving going on. Is it starting again? Detective-Sergeant Herron said there was a lot of thieving from the camps. Bearman was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment with hard' labour.
REMANDED (Before Mr J. A. Robb, JJ».) William Geoffrey Snook was charged with using premises at 78 Opawa road as a common gaming house. Snook was remanded-to appear at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, bail being allowed in his own recognisance of £IOO. Lord Mountbatten an Admiral.— Lord Louis Mountbatten has been given the acting rank of admiral as from August 25, the date, on which he was appointed supreme commander in south-east Asia/—London, September 12.
