NURSES’ UNIFORM ALLOWANCE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 10. A request that nurses’ uniform allowances should be increased on nurses leaving for overseas was made in an urgent question by Mr H. Atmore (Independent, Nelson), on behalf of the member for Napier (the Hon. W. E. Barnard), to the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F, Jones) when the House met this afternoon

Mr Jones, in reply, said that a uniform grant of £SO. plus an annual maintenance grant of £2O, was payable to officers, both male and female, who were required to serve overseas. The question of nurses’ clothing generally was now the subject of correspondence with Middle East Headquarters, representations having been made that some new system of issue would be necessitated through the difficulty nurses experienced in making direct purchases in war theatres. The mufti allowance to servicemen and women on discharge from the forces had recently been increased, and it was not proposed to make any further increases in the amounts decided' upon.
