ALIBI AS DEFENCE
CHARGE OP INDECENT ASSAULT CASE An alibi was raised as a defence by Mr J. K. Moloney in the Supreme Court in Christchurch yesterday, when William Robert Riddell, a boot operative, was charged with indecently assaulting a girl of eight at Sydenham on July 9. Mr A. W, Brown appeared for the Crown. Counsel will begin their addresses when the Court (over which Mr Justice Northcroft presided) resumes this morning. After evidence had been given by the child concerned (also by her cousin, tt small boy, who claimed to recognise the accused), Riddell went into the witness box. On the late afternoon in question, when the offence was said tq have bean committed, said, accused, he was at the home of his friend, Douglas Barron. Riddell denied that he had seen either of the children until they appeared in Court. Barron gave corroborative evidence. The case is proceeding.
