OBITUARY

DR. L. BRUCE STRINGER Dr. L. Bruce Stringer, whose death has occurred, is remembered for his athletic prowess in his schooldays at Christ’s College; and afterwards, as captain of Guy’s Hospital Rugby XV. In its great days between 1905 and 1910. his name was a household word to the pre-war generation. Apart from his

skill in Rugby football he was courteous and kindly in his association with the younger members under his care. During the Great War he served in all three branches of the forces. In 1914 he wac with the Army in France; as a naval surgeon he served on Earl Beatty’s yacht, converted to a hospital ship; at the R.N.A.S aerodrome at Cranwell, Lincolnshire; and in the Mediterranean and on the island of Thasos where he was in charge of the naval hospital. In 1919 he married Miss Maud Grant, of Frieston, near Cranwell, and then returned to New Zealand where he practised his profession He was the second son of Sir Walter and late Lady Stringer. ' The Christchurch Returned Services’ Association last evening passed a motion of sympathy with the relatives of Dr. Stringer. MR JAMES W. OLIVER Mr James W. Oliver, of Greenstreet, whose death occurred on Sunday at the age of 90 years, was for many vpars a prominent threshing mill owner in the Ashburton county He was born in Victoria, Australia, and arrived at Ashburton in 1874. For a time he worked for Mr Charles Reid, who operated, a flourmill at Wesferfiold where the first water-race in the Ashburton Count? was formed. A lew years later he began business with a portable threshing plant, and eventually owned three large mills, which he operated in the county.
