HISTORIC RESERVE A decision by the Native Land Court at Hawera that 90 acres of Maori land on the banks of the Kaupokonui river should be set aside as a native reserve has recalled a piece of history in which Whango. chief of the Ngaliti tribe, received a visit from Taraikamo with a war party from the north. The greeting was a grim one, with Taraikamo smiting Whango with his patu and killing him. This led to a general battle, but the pa was successfully defended and Taraikamo was driven off. The site of this fight is that which has now been proclaimed a native reserve. Ten acres, originally part of this area, has been made a thoroughfare to the beach close by.
