A CHILDREN’S CHARTER
Sir, —The March number of the “New Era’’ (journal of the New Education Fellowship) contains the text of a Children’s Charter “drawn up in London by educationists from all the United Nations.’’ Significantly enough, Article VI of the charter states explicitly: “Religious training should be available for all children.” Reasons are given. Being chiefly concerned about children, no time is wasted upon sophistry or breaking any futile “formula.” “We want our people to dream dreams and to see visions.... We want them to obey the call to the narrower self to come out into the more spacious world of purpose, comradeship and communion with the deeper spiritual realities.” Correlated issues are included. “Such training,” we read, "can only be given by what Is conventionally called, in English, religious training.” Liberal interpretations follow this statement. The past stubborn stupidity of our Education Institute shall yet be superseded by dynamic Christian faith.—Yours etc., E. H. C. BIDDER. Halswell, June 7, 1943.
