BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC
CANADA’S SHARE IN STRUGGLE , OTTAWA. June 11. ‘For the moment Canada regards the Battle of the Atlantic as her great struggle and she has built ships accordingly,” said the Minister of the Navy (Mr A. L. Macdonald) in the House of Commons. “What we need at present are ships with which to fight the submarines, not submarines themselves. “The Canadian fleet after the war should include cruisers, in addition to destroyers and submarines. Canada’s naval policy in the Pacific is not to rely on America. Canada has some ships which co-operated in the Aleutians operations, but her main strength is undoubtedly in the Atlantic.”
