UNITED NATIONS DAY

DISTINGUISHED VISITORS TO CITY An impressive parade of units of the different fighting services will be a feature of the United Nations Day celebrations, in which the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W, Nash) will take the salute, and with him will be Lord Burghley and Group Captain C. B. Wincott, The Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Women’s War Services’ Auxiliary will be represented in the parade, besides detachments from the St. John Ambulance Brigade, Red Cross, W.R.N.S., and W.A.A.C. Members of the United Slates forces on leave in Christchurch have been invited to take part in the parade, and those wishing to do so arc asked to parade in Latimer square at 2 p.m. alongside the mechanised detachment. The Minister, with Lord Burghley, will fly from Wellington this morning, and will be the guests of honour at the Christchurch Businessmen’s Club's .luncheon, when Mr Nash and Lord Burghley will address members. They will be accompanied by Group Captain Wincott, attached to Lord Burghlcy’s staff. Lord Burghley, the British Controller of Repair and Overseas Supplies, who travelled from England in the Lancaster bomber now visiting New Zealand, is (he eldest son and heir of the fifth Marquess of Exeter. His wife was Lady Mary Theresa Scott, fourth daughter of the seventh Duke of Buccleuch. Lord Burghley has had a distinguished career in politics, industry, and sport. He has been M.P. for the Peterborough Division. Northants, since 1931. He is chairman of the British Olympic Association, a member of the International Olympic Committee, a director of the National Provincial Bank. London and North-Eastern Railway. He was educated at Eton and at Cambridge, was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Lord Hailsham for the World Economic Conference, and Parliamentary Private Secretary to (he Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Supply. As an athlete of international repute, he was the winner of eight British championships, the Olympic 400-metre hurdles G928). and many other events at home and abroad. LORD BURGHLEY ON N.Z.
