SPRINGS COUNTY COUNCIL

MR J. S. SIMPSON RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN Mr J. S. Simpson was re-elected chairman of the Springs County Council at the council’s annual meeting, which was held recently, Cr. P. V. Bailey was elected deputy-chairman, and the chairman was appointed to represent the council on the No. 14 District Highways Council. Cr. E. J. Stalker was appointed to the Selwyn Plantsti6n Board. In a discussion about gorse growing on the sides of roads it was stated that in many cases notices sent to property owners had not been complied with. It was decided to send out final notices, indicating that prosecutions would follow if the gorse were not cleared. The Lower Selwyn Hut Owners’ Association is to be asked to suggest someone to act as supervisor of motor launches at the mouth of the Selwyn river. It was said that there had previously been complaints about speeding on the river. The chairman and Cr. J. Woods were appointed the council’s representatives at the Counties’ Association conference to be held in Wellington next month. ELLESMERE COUNTY WATER-RACE CHARGES INCREASED After discussing the finances of the water race system, the Ellesmere County Council decided at a recent meeting to increase the charges for the .current year by 5s for each 100 acres in each of the three classifications,, making the charges ,SBs, 30s, and 25s lOd. A suggestion was made that there should be a complete overhaul of the race system. In a report, the water race caretaker stated that supply of water from the Rakaia headwords had been satisfactory since work had been done in the riverbed last month, but the supply from Selwyn County had not been good. Advice was received from the Main Highways Board that the amount allocated for maintenance was practically the same as for last year. The county engineer said that his estimates would also be on the lines of those of last year. The Leeston Town Board notified the appointment of Mr W. Johnston, and the Southbridge Town Board the appointment of Mr R. B. Willis as their representatives on the Ellesmere County Zoning Committee.
