The North Christchurch Garden Club held its annual meeting ct the home of Mrs N. Webb, Cleveland street. Members said good-bye to Mrs N. W Gale, the retiring president, who will soon leave for Invercargill. Silver cups for decorative work and the most points in the cut bloom section for the year were won by Miss Johnson and Mesdames C. S. Thompson and Cooper respectively. Mrs E. Prendergast was elected president for the ensuing year. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Beanland. East. Mackenzie. Bashford, Adam, and Sheffield. Mrs Herbert Hamilton. . Murray place, who arrived in Christchurch from Malaya about a year ago, has received unofficial advice that her husband, of whom she has had no news since the fall of Singapore in February last year, is safe and well, ine news was picked up by a friend in Auckland from a Saigon broadcast. Mr Hamilton is a son of Mrs W. M. Hamilton, Cashmere Hills. “The problem of obtaining uniforms for secondary school girls was greater this year than ever before,” saysi the tenth annual report of Miss C. E. Robinson, vocational guidance officer, Christchurch. “The cost of the plainest outfit is now at least £l3. Many parents are uncertain, in any case, whether they should send their child on to school and if the child is not anxious to continue, the cost of the outfit is an unanswerable argument against continuing. This year I have helped 11 mothers to buy school outfits. but I do not propose to continue doing this any longer, as without adequate financial assistance it is too difficult a problem to handle.” Miss C. Henderson presided at the last meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Gifti of clo'hing were received and will be forwarded Immediately to the Mam Mission. Miss Henderson gave an interesting talk on Indian mission work A donation of £5 was left, some weeks ago, in the letter box at the Victoria League’s office, 66 Cathedral square. The envelope containing the money was unaddressed and no name was enclosed. At the last meeting of the league, gratitude to the anonymous donor was expressed by members. At the monthly meeting of the committee of the Riccarton Plunket creche, oresided over by Mrs A G. Bean, the honorary nurse in charge. Mrs McLeod, reported that 44 babies had attended the creche during May. an increase of five for the month, showing the increasing popularity of ihe creche. Of the girls who left post-primary schools in Christchurch last year, seven were apprenticed to pharmacy and one each to engineering draughting, electrical work, and lithography. One took up nursery gardening, 22 are helping on farms, orchards or market gardens, 50 (that is about 7J per cent.) have-gone to university or training college, 12 are training as nurses or dental nurses, and, of the 65 who have remained at home, some intend taking up nursing when they are older. By far the greatest number of girls, 290 in all, went to offices, shops, or commercial colleges, and 59 entered skilled trades such as sewing, cookery, or hairdressing. GOLDEN WEDDING

MR AND MRS S. G. GIBB Mr and Mrs S. G. Gibb, of Motunau. celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding this week. Among members of the family who were present was Mrs Gibb’s mother. Mrs Roberts, who is in her ninety-fifth year and remembers having entertained Sir George Grey when he passed through Otira in 1867. Mrs Roberts arrived in New Zealand by the ship British Empire in 1863.
