WAR LOAN
Sir—On making an application for war loan, I found to my amazement that it is impossible to give war bonds to children of under 10 years of age. Having two granddaughters, one 11 years, the other five years, I am only allowed to give to one child. Now I feel I cannot do that, as it would be unfair to the younger child, so the war loan will be £6O less. Personally I think the Government wrong in making age a stipulation.—Yours, etc CONSTANT READER. June 8, 1943. [When this letter was referred to a member of the Liberty Loan Committee it was stated that the difficulty could probably be overcome by investing for the child under 10 in the name of a trustee. However, it was correct that children over 10 could possess bonds in their own names.] Sir,—l am urged to sacrifice and sacrifice and sacrifice yet again and subscribe to the Liberty Loan. Suppose I do my utmost only to find that the loan is considerably short of the amount required, and suppose again that the rumour that if the amount is lacking the Government will make a loan compulsory becomes a fact, will I, having already gone the limit, have to find the amount demanded, or will my subscription be taken as part of, or perhaps complete fulfilment of the Government demand' If this point is cleared. I think the loan will be more readily subscribed to by the little man.—Yours, etc., LIMITED MEANS. June 9, 1943. [An official of the National Savings Committee replied: "In the first place there has been no official pronouncement that the Government intends to introduce a compulsory loan. Second, should there be a compulsory loan it could be taken for granted that the Government would take note of subscriptions already received. But we believe that the Government has sufficient faith in the people that the loan will be subscribed."]
