CHINESE REPORT SUCCESSES

SUBURBS OF ICHANG PENETRATED HEAVY JAPANESE CASUALTIES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, June 10. A Chungking message says that the Chinese in the Yangtse Valley have penetrated the suburbs of Ichang, the main Japanese forward base in Hupeh Province. ' The Chinese have smashed the enemy defence line south-west of Hwajung. north of the Tungting Lake, inflicting 400 casualties and capturing quantities of equipment. Chinese forces have also recaptured three important points in the northern sector on the upper Yangtse. To-day’s Chinese communique says: “Further heavy casualties were inflicted on Japanese troops fleeing from Itu.
