HEALTH STATISTICS
Sir, —A short time ago an extract from the appendix to the annual rereport of the Department of Health was published in ‘‘The Press.” It stated, inter alia, that 152,563 in-patients were treated—about one in 10 of our total population. These were patients of the department’s own institutions. If we were to take into account outpatients of the hospitals (317,315), those who were treated in private hospitals, and those who were treated m their own homes by doctors for various forms of illness, the staggering proportion to our population would be at least three to one. There are 11.61/ beds, costing £259 each, giving a total cost of more than £3,000,000, not including the cost of mental hospitals. Surely sickness in New Zealand is not as rampant as these figures suggest.— Yours, etc., . HEALTH. June 8, 1943.
