HOCKEY

COMPETITIONS CONTINUED

Fine weather and good grounds favoured the continuation of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s competitions on Saturday. Only two senior games were played, as both University teams were in Wellington at the New Zealand University tournament. SELWYN v, TECHNICAL Lack of good halves lost Technical the game against Selwyn, whose forwards passed the ball about well and took advantage of openings to. register 6 goals to Technical’s 3. Sehvyn’s two wingers, M. Besley and R. Moir, played good hockey, making some good runs and centring well against poor opposition. T. Burtt was again in form, but well marked by the Technical forwards, A. Mocre and N. Elliott. G. Baxter and 0. Whltford maintained a sterling defence for the winners, the latter’s speculating shots being brilliant. Technical failed to make the best use of their wing forwards and the half-back line was very weak, the wing halves especially failing .to mark their men. R. Leney, at left-wing, was not used enough, but made good use of the opportunities that came his way. R. Haining and C Regers had a hard day, and were not at the top of their form, but the weakness of the half-line gave them a difficult task. ARMY V. TRINITY Trinity fielded its strongest team this season, but could only draw with the Army team, the score being 3 all. The game was fast and even throughout, but lacked clever stick play and science. In the first spell Army had the better of the play and Bisman and Allen scored. A third goal to Army came when Allen won a penalty bully and Army were three goals up. H. Barnhill, in goal for Trinity, and Stechman, played a solid defensive game, and towards the end of the spell M. Glentworth went through to open Trinity’s account. Trinity settled down in the second half and led by Salomen and Glentworth evened the score midway through the spell. Army rallied towards the end of the game, but stubborn de'fence kept the Trinity goal intact and the game ended in a draw.
