MAGISTRATE'S COURT

FRIDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) REMANDED A remand until May 24 was graced m the case of Basil George Knox, a labourer, aged 32. who was charged with forging a cheque for £ll, purporting to be signed by F. A. Rumble. CONVICTED AND DISCHARGED Having been punished earlier for other offences, Leonard Hilton Lowndes was convicted and discharged for stealing a blanket valued at 25s from Thomas Patrick Kelly at Rangiora. IMPRISONMENT WITH HARD LABOUR Sentences ■ of three months imprisonment with hard labour were imposed on Thomas Russell and Robert Patrick Bennett. aged 26 and 20 respectively, for being idle and disorderly, in that they had insufficient lawful means of support It was stated that Russell was still under an order to come up for sentence if called upon for a similar offence, and that Bennett had been discharged from a Borstal institution last year. They had both been out of work for some time. TRAFFIC BREACHES The following penalties were imposed in traffic eases brought by the police:— Riding untighted bicycles; Percy Butler 10s; lan Alexander Davidson, 10s; Sta'nlev Harry. 10s; Eric John Poskett. costs only: Murray George Sands, 10s, Rav Patrick Wren, costs only. Taylor, 20s; Leonard William Walker, 10s; Kenneth Russell Clarke, costs only. Passing stationary tramcar: Allen Raymond Warren, 20s, No warrant of fitness: William Marcus Wills, 10s. . .. Unlicensed motor-cycle: Ivan Albert Bennett, 20s (no warrant of fitness, 10s); (incorrect licence sticker, £2). CHILDREN’S COURT “Nothing whatever can excuse the beastliness which you have admitted. If you had any sense of decency you would not be here to-day. This is one of the most beastly offences with which anyone could be charged and it was touch and go as to whether you would not be committed straight away and taken out of the society of decent people." This admonition was given a boy aged 15 who was charged with indecently assaulting another male (aged nine), when he appeared in the Children’s Court before Mr F. F. Reid. S.M.. Mrs T. Green. J.P.. and Mr W. C. Colee, J.P. The boy was placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Officer for 18 months. BUS WINDOWS BROKEN Bus windows valued at £9 14s were broken by two boys aged 10 years, who admitted wilful damage and mischief. They threw stones at a bus in the Tramway Board’s yards near the railway. The boys were severely admonished and discharged and the parents were ordered to share restitution of the damage done. UNLIGHTED BICYCLE “Riders of unlighted bicycles are a menace on the roads at night," said ‘Mr Reid, admonishing and discharging a boy aged 16 for this offence. BREAKING AND ENTERING Charged with breaking and entering a shop and stealing £7 9s 8d from the till, and also with stealing small sums totalling 9s from the same person, a boy aged 12 years was placed, under the supervision of the Child Welfare Officer for 18 months. THEFT OF A PURSE A boy who admitted stealing a purse containing £1 was admonished and discharged. ESCAPED FROM HOME A girl, aged 14, who, it was reported, had escaped from a girls’ home, was charged with the unlawful conversion of a bicycle valued at £lO. She was admonished and ordered to return to the care of the institution. THEFT OF CYCLE WHEEL The case of a boy aged 16 who was charged with the theft of a bicycle wheel and lamp, which was held over some time ago, was brought up for hearing and the boy was admonished and discharged. THREE BOYS CHARGED “The childish rule of 'finding is keeping’ does not apply in reality,” said the Magistrate, when three boys who were jointly charged with the theft of a bicycle valued at £6 said that they had found the machine abandoned in Hagley Park. The police said that the bicycle had been stolen and apparently left in the park. The boys had transferred parts to their own bicycles. The boys were admonished and discharged.
