APPEALS AGAINST DIRECTION

INDUSTRIAL MANPOWER COMMITTEE An appeal by lan Devon P“M» n the direction of the Manpower Officer dl; reeling him to employment with the Pud lie Works Department, Christchurch, was heard by the Industrial Mnapower Committee yesterday. Mr K. G. Archer presided and associated with him were Messrs P. J. Kelly (employees representative) and H. Lee (employers representative) Appellant stated that he was 19 years of ace and had recently been discharged from the Army. His father was at present serving with the Air Force, and his mother, who had poor health, had five young children to look after. He had two other brothers, aged 16 and 17 respectively, who were working in Christchurch. He wished to remain at home to assist his mother with the management of the home. , . _ . “Why did you not work at the first job you were directed to—potato-dig-ging?” asked the Manpower Officer (Mr M. Ross). • "That was too hard, replied appellant. "You can’t just pick and choose your work." said the chairman. “The appeal will bo dismissed.” An appeal by Martha Lavinia Guy against the decision of the Manpower Officer refusing her permission to terminate her employment with L. F. Derbyshire was struck out for want of prosecution. Leslie Henry Thomas Taylor appealed against the decision of the Manpower Officer refusing him permission to terminate his employment with the Woolston Tanneries, Ltd. Taylor stated in evidence that he started work with, the company eight years ago, at the age of 14 years. His work—the making of mechanical leathers for hydraulic lifts and jacks—entailed standing for about two-thirds of each day, and he found that this was telling on his health. He suffered from varicose veins, and for the last three months had been unable to sleep for more than three or four hours each night. This he attributed to the effects of his present work. Replying to the chairman, Taylor said he had no other position to go to if released from his 'employment. Mr J. Henry, who appeared for the company, said that if Taylor had informed the management of his trouble, arrangements could have been made for his transfer to other work entailing less standing. If Taylor were called up for the Army, the company would appeal for him. The case was adjourned for an independent medical examination, the examining doctor to be asked if Taylor is fit to stand at a bench for two-thirds of his working time. The following appeals were adjourned: By the W. Williamson Construction Company against the decision of the Manpower Officer granting Robert William Moore permission to terminate his pre- . sent employment in order to commence work with Hall and Moore, funeral directors, Timaru; by John Cunningham against the direction of the Manpower Officer directing him to transfer his services from employment with the public Works Department at Lyttelton ,to employment with the Public Works Department at Tikao Bay.
