OBITUARY

MR J. A. CLOTHIER The death occurred recently at Te Aroha of Mr Jesse Albert Clothier, aged 80. Mr Clothier was born at Kaiapoi, his parents ha\4ng strived at Lyttelton in the Sir George Seymour, one of the First Four Ships which brought the early pilgrims to Canterbury. Mr Clothier worked on his father’s farm until he was 17. and then worked for a neighbour until he purchased his first farm. In 1890 he married Miss F. Edwards, of Kaiapoi. and they made their home at Clarkville. Later Mr Clothier settled at Te Aroha. Both at Clarkville and Te Aroha, Mr Clothier held many public positions. He was a staunch adherent of the Methodist Church, and was also interested in educational matters. He was president of the Thames Valley Agricultural and Pastoral Association for 10 years, and chairman of the old Te Aroha Dairy Company. He served for a term on the Te Aroha Borough Council, was a Justice of the Peace, and was associated, as president and patron, with the Te Aroha Bowling Club for many years. During the Great War. Mr Clothier was a member of the National Efficiency Board, and a trustee of the board appointed to look after the farms of men on active service. Mr Clothier is survived by his widow. x MR ALEX. FORSYTH The death of Mr Alex. Forsyth occurred recently at Ward. Born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he came out to New Zealand with his parents in 1879, his father purchasing land on Coutts Island, Kaiapoi. He was educated at the Kaiapoi School, and later worked in the Mid-Canterbury and Ashburton districts until 1903, when he was successful in drawing a section in the Hakataramea settlement. He farmed the property with success for 18 years, and then turned his attention from agriculture to sheep, and acquired a holding at Ward, where he remained until his death. Mr Forsyth was a keen exhibitor at A. and P. shows and dog trials throughout the province, He will be remembered as a strong supporter of Rugby football, and he served for many years on district committees. He leaves a widow and nine children.
