DIRECTION TO WOOLLEN MILLS
OAMARU GIRL’S APPEAL DISALLOWED (0.R.) OAMARU. May 13. "I would be better employed as a member of the W.A.A.F., doing clerical work, than as a worker at the Woollen Mills," said Irene Dorothy Hlntz, former theatre cashier and ticket-seller, when appealing, at to-day’s sitting of the Industrial Manpower Committee, against the decision of the District Manpower Officer (Mr E R. Winkel) directing her to the wollen mills. The latter contended that the appellant had "deliberately flouted the regulations” by applying to Join the Air Force after she had been directed to employment at the woollen mills. The committee disallowed the appeal. Disallowing the appeal, the committee, in a prepared statement, said that in spite of the expressed anxiety of appellant to enlist in the armed forces, it could not overlook the acute shortage of female labour for woollen mills, and this appeal was therefore disallowed. The committee, however, recommended that appellant be granted first preference in the event of it becoming possible for the release of female staff at the mill, the position to be reviewed by the Manpower Officer in three months’ time.
