ROAD PASSENGER SERVICES

DEPARTMENT’S REQUEST FOR EXTENSIONS REFUSED On the ground that the position had not improved since operations had been curtailed last year in the interests of tyre and petrol conservation, the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr T. H. Langford) yesterday afternoon declined two applications by the Railway Department (Road Services) for amendments to passenger service licences. One application was for an alteration in the frequency of the service between Christchurch and Akaroa from three days a week to daily. The second application sought the deletion of the 10.10 a.m. WaiparaHanmer Springs and 2 p.m. Hanmer Springs-Waipara service from Monday to Saturday and the substitution of a full-way service by bus between Christchurch and Hanmer Springs. It was argued in support of this applica*tion that a through service would be more convenient for the general public and particularly for convalescent soldiers using the service.
