TURF GOSSIP OamAru Jockey Club Meeting next Saturday.—Special passenger train leaves Chch. 6.35 am., Ashburton 8.23 g.m., Tlmaru 9.30 am. 4449 Well-filled Card . , The Oamaru Jockey Club has received large acceptances for its winter meeting on Saturday, the fields ranging in number from eight to 22. The Winter Cup has drawn 11 good class middle distance horses, including Bashful' Lady. Strip, and Hotch Potch, who raced at the Southland meetings last month. The defections included Amorlad, Macedoine, and The Raker. The Grange Handicap will have the smallest field of the day, but the issue nevertheless appears very open. The list Is headed by Night Pal and RawhJmai, who were taken out of the Cup. An interesting contest should be provided by the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, for which 15 have been paid up for. The brush fences in use at Oamaru are not as formidable as the usual big obstacles, but they have to be mastered, and any faulty Jumping will be punished. The three hack events have also attracted strong representatives of the division, and dual engagements are not likely to affect the fields. Names Claimed Included In a recent list of names claimed is Triad, a two-year-old, described as by Vermeer, Tidal, or Lysander from La France. Others in the list are Irish Note, by Irish Lancer from Half Note, Deficiency, by Defaulter from Waiiti, and Sir Tague, by Gay Circle from Necessary. Change of Ownership Miss Clorane. by Myosotis from Clorane, dam of All Night, has been acquired by Mr V. G. Holloway, of Christchurch, from Mrs R. Fleming. Weights at Te Rapa Noko has top weight, 12-0, in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Te Rapa. Gold Spot is top with H-13 in the Te Rana Steeplechase, and Slayer has 11-4, Spendthrift 11-1, Noko 10-8. Urination 9-9, and Valantua 9-0. Spendthrift has 10-6 (Gold Spot, top. 11-12) in the Hamilton Hurdles. A Big Dividend Nothing was known about the Hawera winner, Black Plato, who had not previously raced, though it is most unusual for a horse ridden by Broughton to pay nearly half a century, says the “Dominion.” Blaqk Plato, owned and trained by Mr F. H. Walker, of Hawera, is a three-year-old gelding by Plato from Peg Black, by Potoa —Maggie Paul, by St. Paul —Mystery Maid, by Enchanter, tracing back to a Riddlesworth mare. Plato, by Iliad from Kiltell, a sister to Kilboy, has left useful gallopers in the Taranaki province. Beau Vite Beau Vite has arrived at Masterton from Australia, and will stand next season at T. R. George’s stud. Over Country at Hawera The Egmont Steeplechase on Saturday was a spectacular race. Etruscan and Last Match raced together in front for nearly two miles, giving fine displays of jumping. Master Lackham, Student Prince, Indian Sun. Conflagration, Chat, and Idle Hour kept the leaders within call and, with three fences to jump, Student Prince and Idle Hour had charge, but Master Lackham took over two fences from home and he won well from Conflagration and Indian Sun, who ran down Idle Hour and Student Prince. Chat dropped out in the last two furlongs and finished ninth. Slayer (6, 6) ran off on the first round. Master Lackham was ridden bv his trainer. P. Burgess, who also trained Sanction, winner of the principal flat event

TROTTING NOTES

Juvenile Stakes The Oamaru Juvenile Trotting Stakes has drawn a field of 13 well bred two-year-olds and the race should be one of the highlights in the Oamaru Jcckey Club’s programme on Saturday. The Waikaura Trot will have the biggest field (22) of the day, but two divisions will not be necessary. The Juvenile Trotting Stakes, transferred from the Oamaru Trotting Club's meeting because of curtailment in permits, will possibly find Acropolis a good favourite, and this wellgrown pacer, who has shown gradual Improvement for the last six months, looks like going on to win other races. When he won the Welcome Handicap at Addington, Acropolis raced under a disability. and. forced to his utmost, he won like a really good racehorse. If the race has not done Acropolis any harm, and no trainer is more understanding of young horses than his trainer, R. B. Berry, Acropolis may prove to be one ■of the best young pacers produced in New Zealand. With Leonln and Nethcrby engaged, M. Holmes has a very useful pair, while his crack two-ycar-old, Bel Hamed, is not engaged. Native Scott and Benny Bridge have been carefully handled, and may have to be considered on the day of the race. Statistics Statistics published in the New Zealand Trotting Calendar show Haughty to be An easy winner in the list of winning horses this season, with £3070, and Shadow Maid, who has not raced recently, is seednd on the list with £2410. Pacing Power Is third with £IB4O, and then follow, Joan Conquest £I7BO, Burt Scott £1665, Countless £1615, Douglas McElwyn £1535. Parshall £1550, Peter Smith £I4BO, and Integrity £1420. Winning Drivers With three wins at the South Auckland meeting on Saturday, the Auckland trainer, F. J. Smith, brought his total to 25 both in the winning trainers and drivers’ lists, for the season.
