MILK FOR SCHOOLS

Sir, —Private enterprise and profits are apparently still considered by our Government of more importance than the national interest. School milk is off; yet new milk bars are being opened and existing shops get all they require. Milk bars are mainly patronised by adults, who drink a glass of milk because they feel like one. Milk to growing children is vitally necessary; otherwise, why was it ever introduced? The present distribution gives us the impression that our children are given milk when it is plentiful to make a market for the Government-formed monopolist. Our surplus apples are used for pig fattening and any milk over the Government gives to the child. Let us have milk in schools all the time; milk shakes are a secondary consideration. —Yours, etc., BARE KNUCKLES. May 11, 1943.
