THE CADRE SYSTEM

Sir,—l read in this morning’s paper of the “Cadre” system, whereby grade 1 and II men, until now untrained, will have a month only in camp and then return to civil occupation until they are required. Might I ask a question which is worrying not only me. but many other wives in my position? My husband is grade II and has been in the Army for over a year. Some months ago he was sent to the islands for garrison duty at very short notice. Owing to circumstances, many of us found it advisable to let our homes for six months and now wonder just where we stand when that time expires. Is it unreasonable to ask how long these men will be away? Again, when they do return, will they be back in civil occupation indefinitely seeing there are 60,000 involved in the new recruit training scheme?— Yours, etc., UNSETTLED, May 5, 1943,

The announcement to which she referred dealt with the Territorial Force, the training of which did not directly concern the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The time men of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force were away from New Zealand was a matter for the Government and the furlough they received was governed by the circumstances in which they were serving.]
