FIELD GUNS FOR HOME GUARD

EQUIPMENT ISSUED RECENTLY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 10. During the last few weeks Home Guard artillery units, recently formed throughout the Dominion, have been issued with field guns, and this new branch of Home Guard training is now well under way. With a great influx of war material into New Zealand during recent months, the requirements of the Territorial Force have now been met, and for this reason it has been possible to equip the Home Guard units referred to. Home Guardsmen selected for this duty are taking a keen interest in the training and will considerably strengthen the potential fighting effectiveness of the Home Guard. Good progress has already been made in the training of some artillery sections in South Island units of the Home Guard. A good proportion of the person nel have had artillery experience, either overseas in this war or the last or with the territorial forces. In some cases the sections are approaching the standard at which they could have live' shell practice.
