AUCKLAND WATER SUPPLY

* RAIN BRINGS IMPROVEMENT (P.A.) ' .AUCKLAND, May 10. A welcome fall of rain at the weekend at Auckland has made the city water position considerably less critical and improved the outlook for the week. However, it was emphasised to-day that the supply was being maintained in a hand-to-mouth fashion with aid from many temporary sources, and that more economy, not less, would be called for until further notice.

A suggestion that a library book disinfecter should be constructed for use at the Timaru Municipal Library was submitted to the electricity committee of the Timaru Borough Council by the Borough Electrical Engineer (Mr R. D. Veitch) and was referred to the library committee. Although the possibility of infection from library books had been denied by competent authorities, there was still a section of the public which was averse to borrowing books for that reason, said Mr Veitch. The procedure would be to place books in a cylinder and to pump formalin, vapour into the drum. The apparatus would not be "ery large and could be made by the electricity department at a cost of about £BO to £IOO. Mr Veitch said that he did not know of any other library providing similar facilities. Pointing out an anomaly in resnect to a w'ar pensioner’s concession, Mr C. J. Beveridge, speaking at the annual meeting of the Oamaru Returned Services’ Association, said that while any returned man of the 1914-18 war. receiving a full disability pension, was exempt from the Social Security levy, this concession did not apply to returned men of the present war. The meeting carried a remit to the Dominion conference of the Returned Services’ Association, urging that the anomaly should be rectified. The demand for pork at the present time was far greater than the pig industry’s ability to supply it, said the chairman of the Canterbury District Pig Council (Mr B. Grant) in a rcoort presented to the annual meeting of the council last evening. The entry of the United States into the war had overcome the difficulty of disposing of pork, of which there had previously been a large accumulation. Some difficulty would be experienced in meeting the demand, owing to the culling which had taken place in breeding stocks.
