TURF GOSSIP

Rider Seriously Injured The Riccarton hurdle horseman. A. Leach, had a serious mishap at Ashburton on Saturday. His mount, Midgavd. fell on landing, after a clean effort over the third fence, and evidently rolled over Leach, who suffered a broken leg and a broken thigh, in addition to concussion. Leach is likely to be out of the saddle for six months. Leach had the promise of seme good riding during the winter.

Caught on Post Valantua gave an attractive performance in getting up to beat Norse on the post in the Longbeach Hurdles at Ashburton, and it now seems that he is worth taking to the North Island. Valantua, however, was probably lucky, in that Norse’s rider, M. Hollands, took him too cheaply in the run home. In addition, the rider kept looking round after his mount led over the last fence and this did not improve his prospects. Hollands was fined £1 after the race for this offence. End to End

Last Effort showed marked improvement cn his racing at Riccarton by outclassing his opponents over the final stages of the Eiffelton Hack Handicap at Ashburton. He was first away and was not in danger of being overhauled at any stage of the race. Ranjl, who was kept in behind the leaders until the run home was commenced, threw out a challenge, but had no chance of getting near the winner. Banco was a fair third, Just beating Papette, who was well up at the straight entrance, but did not finish on as well as in recent races.

An Interesting Winner The field for the' Trial Stakes was the weakest seen out for some time. Waltzing Matilda was sent out a good favourite and her supporters were definitely unlucky, as after being slow away, she was disappointed when moving up at the end of the first furlong, and then finished up in third place. Trapeze and Greek Idol were first into the straight in front of Perseverance, who took charge early in the run home, and won easily from Greek Idol, who held off the favourite. Perseverance, allhough 11 years of age, had had only three races previously, and had filled third place in two of them. He was sent by his breeder, Mr J. P. McQuilkin, to the West Coast as a three-year-old to race there, but suffered leg injuries when being unloaded, and after returning home was turned but On his owner’s property. After being forgotten for eight years he was brought in and put into training, and had only been about a month in work before Saturday’s race. It was always considered that horses by Shambles all required plenty of time, and in the case of Perseverance this theory was substantiated. Sascha’s Success

Donnybrook Fair again carried a lot of money at Ashburton, but failed to gain a place. He was almost in line with the leaders, Trapeze, Renarde, Highland Dance, and Patria commencing the run home, and when he appeared to be inclined to run cut, his rider drew the whip. However, he did not improve his position and finished very weakly, some six lengths from the winner, Sascha, who rushed through a wide opening on the fence in the run home, and had the issue settled a long way from the post. Highland Dance stayed cn for second money, well clear of Renarde and Night Believer, Last Effort, penalised 71b for his win, was the early leader, but lasted only for about a furlong. Again Expensive Eulogist cnce more failed on Saturday, this time on a* ground that shduld have suited him. He will soon be returned to his owner by C. Emerson, and will no doubt be spelled for the winter.

TROTTING NOTES

At Ashburton The two trotting events at Ashburton on Saturday provided interesting contests, but both were won easily. In the first, the Selma Handicap, the three-ycar-old Volusta was sent out at a short price and carried out his part by a decisive success. Lockheed ran to the front at the end of half a mile, and turning for home was several lengths in front of Lady Bligh, with another gap to Playwright. Volusta put in an appearance at this stage, and continuing a powerful run, ran into second place on reaching the straight. He gradually overhauled Lockheed, and was not called upon for the remainder of the journey. Lockheed tired badly in the last furlong, and Lady Bligh easily accounted for him. Francis Logan was six lengths away. Several horses broke up at the start, and in the early stages, including the bracketed pair, May Scott and Light Brigade, Leonin and Plunder Bar. Quite New Shows Form

Smirke was confidently supported to win the Rakaia Trot, and My Lady Luck was also in strong demand. Both, however, jeopardised their chances by bad beginnings, and they were well in the rear with half the journey covered. Pocket Book ran to the front at the end of six furlongs, and led to the straight entrance from Quite New anrl Silver Flash, with First Venture, Volterra, and My Lady Luck the most prominent of the remainder. Pocket Book did not retain hi- position long in the run home, and Quite New soon ran past him to carry on for an effortless win from the little fancied Silver Flash, who paid double figures. My Lady Luck did well (o finish on into third place, a length in front of Pocket Book, with Smirke, First Venture, and Volterra following. Honours In Driving Tite eight winners at Forbury Park on Saturday were handled by three drivers. J. Wilson, whose attention in recent years has been confined to the trotter, won the opening event with Cleeve Hill, Ordnance being scratched, and later in the day Cleeve Hill was scratched for the Victory Handicap, which Ordnance won. P. Gallagher did the hat trick by driving Scotch Music, Cheval d’Or, and Kid Wolf to victory in successive races, and later in the day he won the Renown Handicap with Burnham. The other two races were wen by Lucky Gem and Joan Conquest, who were driven by H. J. Smith. ’ Gallagher's performance was exceptionally good, and in each race his horse returned a substantial dividend. A False Price

Lucky Gem, a well-bred gelding by Lucky Jack from Sea Pearl, sold recently by R. B. Berry .to G. J. Barton, paid a surprisingly good dividend when lie won the St. Clair Handicap at Forbury Park. In his new colours he .won the Wyndharn Stakes, and although he broke up at Addington in the Futurity Stakes, his form was better than that of the majority engaged. With the exception of the Futurity Stakes, each race that Lucky Gem has run has shown him to be a good solid pacer and an improver.
