DIRECTION OF DOMESTICS

♦- NEW ORDERS MADE IN AUSTRALIA

(Rec, 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 9. Australian women employing domestics should, as part of their contribution to the war effort, do their own housework and release their employees for war jobs, said Mr G. J. Bellemore, Commonwealth Deputy-Director of Manpower. The manpower authorities intend to proceed immediately to call up all domestics in excess of one employed in Australian households. Those suitable will be made available to hospitals. The authorities have power to direct women to war-time employment but not to compel them to enlist in the Women’s Auxiliary Service. A warning has been given that women directed to war jobs will be prosecuted unless they undertake the jobs to which they have been directed.
