CONCENTRATED APPLE JUICE

TRIALS AT CAWTHRON INSTITUTE fP.A.) NELSON, May 7.

Samples of concentrated apple juice prepared at the Cawthron Institute are to be submitted to the Internal Marketing Division and the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation for their opinion. If concentrated juice proves of commercial value it may open a new avenue for the disposal of reject fruit in the Nelson district.

At a meeting of the Cawthron Trust Board, the director (Sir Theodore Rigg) exhibited samples of the concentrated juice prepared in the chemical laboratory by Dr. H. O. Askew. Juice from a number of different varieties of apples had been prepared in concentrated form and showed considerable range in taste and character. The Stunner and Lord Wolsclcy varieties had a sharp acid character, while uie Delicious was definitely sweet. Certain other varieties, such as Granny Smun, were intermediate in characteristics.

Members of the board expressed the opinion that under war-time conditions concentrated juices may prove valuable by virtue of their superior keeping finality and the saving of transport and bottles. In the United States certain tobacco manufacturers are now using apple syrup, made by the concentration ot apple juice, for flavouring tobacco.
