The Minister of National Service (the Hon. A. McLagan) arrived in Christchurch from the north yesterday. Mr E. T. Tirikatene, M.P., arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Wellington. To fill the vacancies caused by the death of Mr E. Hay, and the retirement of Mr W. H. Clark, Messrs H. S. Lawrence and D. W. J. Gould have joined the board of directors of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd. Major Francis Ericson, of the Salvation Ai'my, has been appointed manager of the People’s Palace in Christchurch. The Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr F. E. Sutton) announced, at a meeting of the Lyttelton Emergency Precautions Service, that, he did not intend to seek re-election as Mayor at the municipal election next' year. Mr V. C. Lawn, Chief Postmaster, will return to-day from Wellington. Lieutenant-General E. Puttick, Officer Commanding the New Zealand military forces, has notified his intention of attending'the jubilee celebrations of Waitaki Boys’ High School, of which he is a former pupil. During his stay 'in Oamaru General Puttick will be the guest of the rector, Mr Frank Milner. The celebrations will begin on Saturday, May 15. Lieutenant T. F. S, Rudd, of Christchurch, has received advice of the death of his brother, Captain Douglas Rudd, whose ship was torpedoed and lost whilst sailing in convoy. Captain Rudd was mentioned in dispatches in 1941, when a German aeroplane was shot down from his ship in the Irish Channel. The resignation of Mr G. M. Keys as a member of the Christchurch Technical College day-school staff because of his full-time appointment as boys’ vocational guidance officer and executive head of the Christchurch Youth Centre was received with regret by the Board of Managers of the college last evening. Appreciation of the services of Mr Keys to the college and to the community was expressed by the Principal (Dr. D. E. Hansen) in his report to the board, and by the chairman (Mr T. W. West). The Rev. A. Mcßean, of Ashburton, has been appointed to act as ministerial supply for the Methodist Churches at Sumner and Redcliffs. He will begin his ministry on Sunday with services at Redcliffs in the morning, and at Sumner in the evening.
