MALE VOICE CHOIRS IN MILITARY CAMPS

Sir,—As far as I know, there is only one camp male voice choir in the South Island. This has been formed in one of our principal camps and ure. dates by some months the excellent Army Education and Welfare Service, which, has the laudable object, among others, of encouraging soldiers to provide their own music. “Own” is correct. Members of this choir have had to provide funds from their own pockets (with , the help of a patriotic fund grant and the loan of some music from the Christchurch and Invercargill Male Voice Choirs). Is it correct that the National Broadcasting Service has the sum of £20,000 to spend under this scheme? If so, could some portion of this sum be devoted “to encourage the men to provide their own music,” an object for which the A.E.W.S. appears to be claiming credit?— Yours, etc., HOPEFUL. April 20, 1943. [Commenting on this letter, the Director of Broadcasting (Professor James Shelley) says: “The idea put forward by the correspondent is regarded by the National Broadcasting Service as good, and at the present time inquiries are being made into the practicability of carrying into effect the correspondent’s suggestion.”]
