CHIMNEYS DAMAGED BY EARTHQUAKE

SUBSIDY ON REPAIR COST IN WELLINGTON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 5. Wellington citizens who have had earthquake-damaged chimneys repaired under the Wellington City Council’s scheme are to receive a subsidy of 30 per cent, on the cost —about 2 per cent, from the council and the remainder from the Government. This was reported at yesterday's meeting of the council. Where, through hardship. persons are unable to pay the repair bill, the Government will meet it and assume the debt. In other cases where it is necessary the council will arrange terms for payment by instalment.

Allegations of overcharging are to be investigated, and if they are considered proved payment of the disputed amount is to be withheld by the council from the contractor concerned. The Government has stated that it cannot accept responsibility for any portion of the cost where the work v/as carried out privately instead of through the official scheme, but the council intends to urge the justice of reversing this decision.
