ENGAGEMENT

The engagement is announced of Doris Emily, second daughter of Mr and Mrs E. S. Streeter, Lincoln road, Halswell, to Percy Lament (Monty), second son of Mr and Mrs E. W. Johnson, Waimairi road, Riccarton. The meeting of the Mount Pleasant Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs E. A. Shepheard, St. Andrews Hill, Miss Hood-Williams presiding. The speaker for the afternoon was ”'r J. R. Templin, who gave an outline of the preparation cf a garden for competition. Results of competitions were as follows:—Low bowl, Mrs Lewers 1, Mrs R. A. Sladen 2; chrysanthemum, Mrs Buxton 1, Mrs Bell 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Shepheard, Lewers, and Gill. The sum of £25 has been given to the voluntary aid detachment of the St. John Ambulance Association by the Christchurch Metropolitan Trotting Club. The good work that has been done, and is being done, by sub-centres - of the Red Cross Society is demonstrated in the exhibition of work done by members and now open at a shop in Cashel street, nearly opposite Ballantynes. There are displayed trays, basins, bowls, and other medical requirements made of papier mache, which in turn is made from waste paper. These goods will be sent to emergency hospitals and used by the Red Cross Society and E.P.S. In the collection are also lanterns, candlesticks, pannikins, and mugs made from waste tins.
