TURF GOSSIP Liable to RebandUap The condition* of both the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps provide that the winner, after declaration of weights, of any race or races of the value of £3OO to the winner, may be re-handi-capped. To-day’s Timaru Cup will be worth £350 to the winner. Easter Racing at Rlccarton There were no surprise defections from either the Great Easter Handicap or the Great Autumn Handicap, when an acceptance was taken yesterday. The two Aucklanders, Monte Cristo and Foxola, were not expected td make the long trip south, as they have been freely nominated for the Auckland Easter meeting. Macedoine was taken out of the Great Easter, and is to race at Southland at that time, but is to return for the Great Autumn. Prince Shad was taken out of both races, and is evidently not to reappear during the autumn programmes. All Night is missing from the long race a? he has not done any work for some time. There are 21 left in the Great Easter, and 23 in the Great Autumn Handicap, and with the probability of very few of these failing to carry out their engagements, the fields promise to be the largest and strongest for many years past. The nominations for the minor events also make a formidable list, the hack events especially being well filled.

A Mixed Field The Electric Stakes at Washdyke today is for two-year-olds and upwards have never won a race exceeding £SO m value to the winner, and there are eight two-year-olds carded, the largest number in the event for some years. John o’ London is a brown colt by Solicitor General from Raphis, an eight-year-o)d sister to Phar Lap, and is trained by C. McCarthy for Mr K. Austin: Golden is a chestnut filly by Man’s Pal from Warden’s Queen, owned by Mr A. Louisson, who also owns Upton, by Nightmarch from Cheloid, both youngsters being trained by R. Register; Burberry, who has had two races, is by Man’s Pal from Windshield, apd Is trained, by F. D. Jones fur Mrs J. W. Woodhouse; Vatort, Whose name was missed from the telegraphed acceptances, is a chestnut gelding by Broiefort from Emberalton, and is a brother to the recent good winner in the North Island, Embroider. He is owned by Mr R. Bryan, and is trained at Hornby by J. Bryce, Mike is by Lord Quex from Marais, and is trained by c. Dawson for Mr c. C. Davis; Stavros is by Phaleron Bay from Brown Paper, and is trained by C. Emerson for Dr. M. G. Louisson: St. Nattar is a well-grown chestnut colt by St. Boswell from Reckless, and is owned by Mrs T. Stone of Sumner, for whom she is trained by H, Nurse; and Tikakoura is by Solicitor General from Gold Label, and is owned and trained by M. B, Edwards, of Greymouti). Cross-country Performers '■ The steeplechasers are beginning to emerge from their retirement, states the "Dominion." Foxiana raced at Awapunl and at Hastings Slayer and Dozie Boy raced each day. All are looking well. Dqzie Boy especially is full of beans and was doing his best to buck his rider off on Saturday. Mr P. Curtis had bad luck in Ruling Star breaking down as the gelding was well forward and would probably have done an early steeplechase agaip. this year.

Thoroughbreds In Enemy Hands Running true to form, von Ribbentrep, after plundering French studs, is now racing in France under a well-known name. This fact was revealed by Lord Rosebery, president pf the English Thorougnbred Breeders' Association, Lord Rosebery said: "When the war ends there will be numerous difficulties with regard to the eligibility of names of horses or mares to be entered in the English stud book which have left their present ownership on the Continent. For instance, I have been credibly informed that a number of mares —some of them of the highest class, and one pf them a classic Winner—have ben commandered to make a stud for Rlbbenlrop. who is, I am told, racing in France, having assumed a very well-known name on the Continent. I cannot believe that these animals will be admitted to the British Stud Book, at any rate, till they are restored to their rightful owners- Future planning of all kinds for after the war is In the air. and I am sure Messrs Weatherby will be looking into methods to keep their Stud Book unsullied."

The former is an aged mare by Guy Parrish—lmperial Logan, and Scotty Burns is a four-year-old by U. Scott from a Matchilght mare, True Potts, a two-year-old by Jack Potts from True Reflection, trained by A. Fairbajrn, will be bracketed with Cameron’s pair. Trusty Scott, also engaged in this race, the property of Mrs W. T. Lowe and trained by T. H- Gunning, is a three-year-old gelding by U. Scott from Trusty Maid. He will be brapketed with Mr W- fLowe's five-year-old McAlister, by David McElwyn—Trusty Maid.

Purse for Record Breaker The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has decided to offer a purse of £250 to any horse breaking the existing New Zealand mile record at present held by Lawn Derbv, Imin 59 2-ssec. A stipulation is that the record must he made at a meeting run under the auspices of the Metropolitan Trotting Club.
