MAGISTRATE’S COURT

THURSDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, 5.JJ.) REMANDED Charged with breaking and entering the warehouse of Fred Cross and Sons, and committing theft, Joseph Benson, a labourer, aged 23. was remanded to April 12. CHARGES OF ASSAULT For assaulting Laurie Donald, at Christchurch, on February 10, Richard Verdun Burke was fined £2, in default 10 day?’ imprisonment. Rupert Terrance Yaxley and Reginald Arthur de Rungs were charged with assault on a female. Senior-Sergeant Bickerdike said that both the accused had been drinking and had pushed a girl off the footpath into the gutter. Mr F. D. Sargent, for the accused, said that the two men, both of whom were soldiers who would go overseas soon, had had too much to drink and the offence had been committed In .a .-spirit of ,larrikinism. The military records of both were good. The Magistrate said that the Court would not tolerate such acts of larrikini,sm. The Court had had to break the habit two years ago, and would break it again. In fining each accused £6. the Magistrate said that only their military obligations prevented him from sending them te gaol. BREACHES OF DEFENCE REGULATIONS For failing to notify a change Of address within tha seven days specified, Bernard Mora, who appeared in uniform, was ordered to pay costs, George Frederick Southerwood (Mr C. V. Quigley) was charged with falling to attend Home Guard parades. On Mr Quigley's suggestion the Magistrate adjourned the case for two months to give the defendant a chance to fulfil his obligations. Nell Quinton Elstob, aged 18, was charged with not attending Home Guard parades. The case was adjourned for one month to allow reservist to fulfil his obligations. ALLEGED THEFT On a charge of stealing bicycle wheels, tyres, and handle-bars to the value of £l9 9s, John Ernest Southerwood was remanded for a week to allow a report to be received from the Probation Officer. THEFT OF OVERCOAT For stealing a raincoat valued at £2, Alexander Cameron Maxwell was fined £5.
