WAR SAVINGS
Sir,—lt is interesting to see in this morning’s paper that the Christchurch City Council has carried a resolution “urging other local bodies to support and invest in the War Savings Campaign.” Before our City Council passed this resolution it should have made certain that it is doing as much as other local bodies in this direction. Probably if the facts were brought to light it would be found that the Christchurch City Council has lagged very much behind other local bodies in its support of the National War Savings Campaign. If the City Council has a group scheme in operation, would the Mayor tell us the number of its t staff who are members of the group and the total number of staff employed. Then we may judge as to whether the Christchurch City Council has any right to urge that other local bodies support the National War Savings Campaign.—, Yours, etc., LOCAL BODY No. 2.
April 6, 1943. [The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) said all facilities had been given organisers of the national savings scheme to meet members of the staff and'explain details of the scheme. He was advised that a strong savings group had been formed and that contributions were above the average. He was not a member of the savings committee, so he did not know the figures. The resolution to which the letter referred commended national savings to “citizens, employers, and public bodies" in a general way, which included the council itself. He added that the City Council had more than £IBO,OOO invested in Government securities, including treasury bills, national savings, war loan, and Savings Bank deposits.]
