Mr A. L. Smith, Superintendent of Transport, New Zealand Railways; who has been visiting Christchurch, returned to Wellington yesterday. The appointment of Colonel C. W. Salmon, D.C.M., at present DeputyQuartermaster General, as representative of the New Zealand Chiefs of Staff at the headquarters of the south Pacific force was announced yesterday by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser). During his visit to Admiral W. F. Halsey’s headquarters, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates discussed the desirability of making such an appointment. Colonel Salmon, said Mr Fraser, was an officer with a valuable record of service, and would serve as a channel through which Admiral Halsey could be kept informed of developments in New Zealand, and a medium for the communication of Admiral Halsey’s wishes to the Chiefs of Staff.—(P.A.)
